13/02/08

Today was to be typical tourist stuff, so went into the heart of SF on the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport), eat your heart out London Underground, and bought tickets for the cable cars. I have never been on such a system, efficient, noisy and FUN to ride either inside or hanging on the outside. The hills here are something else 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 with little flat intersections in between, no wonder they needed a cable system.
A short walk from Fisherman’s Wharf to a floating Boat museum, with shipwrights working all around restoring old boats, then around the corner a tour of a WW11 submarine. This was only the second sub. I had been on and I am still amazed at how 80 crew could get along in such a small space. Lunch was another experience, stalls everywhere selling seafood, had Clam Chowder in a hollowed out small round loaf. No disposal problems, and delicious. On to pier 33 for the trip to Alcatraz island, damn, arrived 5 minutes too late for the last boat.
My legs are getting a little worn by now, so took a Pedicab back to the cable car terminus, caught a car and changed routes at California Street to see a different area, rode it all the way to the terminus and just stayed on for the return trip.
On the way down I had seen a shop selling smokes and needing a packet hopped off when we got there. Both of us decided that we needed a drink so walked down the hill to a small bar we had seen. What a decision!!!! There were only 4 others in there including the lass on the other side, ordered and paid for two Buds, we were only halfway down the bottle when the bar lass asked if we liked whisky? (Is the Pope Catholic?) She then set up a shot for all in the bar. We ordered another Bud. and paid for them, halfway down these, the bar lass announced that the third beer is free, whoopee!! Shortly after this another Bud arrived with another shot of whisky, courtesy of a guy who had just walked in. So 8 Buds and 4 whiskies for less than $20, best bar prices I know of.
We sauntered off looking for somewhere to eat that the bar lass had recommended, well we found it, but it had a power cut, no lamb for us tonight then. Caught the cable car down to Chinatown instead and had a wonderful meal, leaving with an enormous “doggy bag” for the trip back on the BART. It was a long day, but what a day, the only casualties were my legs, absolutely knackered
